What is the Municipal Heritage Committee?

The Municipal Heritage Committee (MHC) promotes and preserves Smiths Falls’ built and cultural heritage.  It is an advisory committee to Town Council on matters such as building designation and heritage preservation.  The MHC strives to have a positive working relationship with owners of heritage designated properties and supports local talent and expertise.

Interested in Becoming a Member?

Contact the Clerks Office at Town Hall for details.

When Does the Committee Meet?

The MHC meets on the fourth Wednesday every month (except December) at 4pm in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.  All meetings are open to the public and we welcome anyone interested to come join us!

What is Heritage Designation?

Heritage designation is a land use planning tool used to recognize the historical, architectural or contextual value and integrity of a structure.  Properties can be designated individually or as part of a larger neighbourhood through the passing of a bylaw.

Designation allows the municipality to recognize the importance of the property to the local community, protect the properties heritage value, encourage conservation and stewardship and promote further understanding about the property.

Criteria for Designation

A property must meet one or more of the following criteria:

Physical Value:

  1. is a rare example of style, type, or construction;
  2. displays a high degree of artistic merit;
  3. demonstrates a technical or scientific achievement

Contextual Value:

  1. defines or supports the character of an area;
  2. is linked to its surroundings;
  3. is a landmark

Historical/Associative Value:

  1. is associated with a theme/event/person of significance;
  2. yields information contributing to the understanding of the community;
  3. demonstrates the work of an architect or designer

Grants

At the present time, The Town of Smiths Falls does not have funding or grant programs available for heritage properties.  Any future funding and grant programs that can be utilized by heritage property owners will be available on the Town’s website.
