Get rolling at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario – Did you know Smiths Falls is home to one of the most fascinating museums around? The Smiths Falls Railway Museum is one of the few railway museums in Eastern Ontario, and features a 1940s caboose, an operating hand car, and the only remaining Dental Car in North America! Explore local architecture – Smiths Falls is home to a number of architectural points of interest. Take a stroll through the downtown and get a closer look at the architectural detail of the former Rideau Hotel, Smiths Falls Public Library, Town Hall, and other buildings along the way. Don’t miss a visit to Heritage House Museum, a good example of Georgian architecture, with picturesque Palladian windows, a unique mirror image façade, and the only two-story indoor privy in Eastern Canada.

Downtown Smiths Falls is one of the prettiest downtowns around, with wide streets, historic buildings, and beautiful floral displays. Stroll through downtown Smiths Falls and explore the many shops and boutiques located there for some stellar retail therapy!


Take in a show at Station Theatre – Don’t miss a visit to the Station Theatre, a historic building that was at one time home to the Canadian Pacific Rail Station, and today serves Smiths Falls as a community theatre. Although the building has been transformed into a 140-seat theatre, the original architecture and décor have been maintained, giving the theatre a unique feel, and lending a special atmosphere to the performances that take place there. Plan your visit to coincide with one of the theatre’s many performances, featuring talented local performers.


Swim at the beach – Who doesn’t love spending the day lounging at the beach, building sandcastles, and watching little ones swim and play? In Smiths Falls you can lounge in the shade while overlooking one of Canada’s greatest treasures, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day outdoors, basking in the beauty of the scenery. Play in the clear waters of the river, and relax on a smooth sandy beach to while away the long summer hours. Hike or cycle a waterside trail – There are few places more beautiful in Eastern Ontario than the canal in Smiths Falls. Take a walk or bike ride on one of the many waterside trails that are found in the community and get a different perspective of the waterway. The Cataraqui Trail and Rideau Trail are both excellent multi-purpose trails found in Smiths Falls, and a good spot for a short – or longer – exploration of the area.
