Living in Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls is located centrally in a beautiful and historic region of Eastern Ontario, and easily accessed by numerous highways and roads, by bus or rail, by boat, or even private aircraft. The Town’s location also means fast access to major Ontario and Canadian centres, with the city centers of Ottawa and Kingston within an hour’s drive, and Toronto and Montreal within 3-4 hours. For travelers to the United States, several border crossings are within 1-2 hours.

Good living requires good services and Smiths Falls has plenty, including its own well-trained and well-equipped police and fire services, an excellent hospital and other medical services, and an excellent group of schools for both the public (a new high school in 2005) and separate school systems. Community college services are available in Smiths Falls and we are close to several other college campuses and universities.

Smiths Falls has an appealing selection of housing, from economy to luxury, historic and new, generously spacious or conveniently compact, single homes, semi-detached, townhouses or condominiums. Smiths Falls is served by three retirement homes. A variety of rental options are available.

Smiths Falls and its neighbouring areas provide a recreational paradise, featuring an abundance of indoor and outdoor recreational activities – tennis, squash, curling, hockey, skating, ball, soccer, lawn bowling, boating, fishing, golf, hiking (Cataraqui and Trans Canada Trails), biking, etc. We have scenic in-town walkways and numerous parks throughout the Town. A variety of other structured activities are also available for children and adults.

Service clubs and other groups and a large number of churches mean there’s plenty of opportunity for making friends and being a part of the community. A new activity building for seniors adds to the quality of life for those enjoying their retirement years. A theatre group is converting a former railway station into a live theatre and cultural centre. Volunteers are contributing in many other facilities and activities as well, including the three museums located in Town.

Smiths Falls offers plentiful shopping in locally-owned and well-known major retail stores, to meet residents' needs. There is an active downtown, an indoor shopping mall, several plazas and big box and other stores around the Town. A good variety of restaurants from cafes, fast-food, take-out, family and fine dining are also available.

Excellent financial services are located in Smiths Falls, including many major banks – CIBC, TD Canada Trust, Royal, Scotiabank, Montreal, credit unions and other financial businesses.

That Smiths Falls is a special Town is reinforced every year by the large number of visitors who come for many reasons -- to visit our three great museums, attend a variety of festivals and other special events, enjoy their RVs in our waterfront in-town park, dock their boats, or just enjoy our great location on the historic Rideau Canal-a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s all here, so how about you?
