Notice – Recent Media Coverage on Lead in Drinking Water

As a result of media coverage across the country concerning lead in drinking water, we wanted to provide residents of Smiths Falls with some information and assurance about water quality in Town.

The Town of Smiths Falls has an active lead sampling program and a corrosion control program to manage lead levels and to meet drinking water standards. The Town conducts quarterly water tests for lead from the distribution system, and also takes regular samples from residential and non-residential taps.

Drinking water supplied by the Town surpasses provincial and federal requirements, however, drinking water can come into contact with lead in the ‘service lines’ (the pipes that connect each property to the water main). Lead can also be found in the plumbing materials in the home, such as lead pipes, brass fittings, and lead solder, particularly in homes built prior to 1955.

If you are concerned about the possibility of lead in your drinking water, the Town can arrange to have your water sampled as part if its residential testing program. Please contact the Public Works and Utilities Department at 613-283-4124 Ext 5501 or 5502 for additional information or to make arrangements.
