St. Francis Masonic Lodge # 24

In October of 1839, a number of Masonic Brethren from the village of St. Francis (Smiths Falls) were anxious that a Craft Lodge should be opened in their village. A writing request was sent to the Upper Canada Grand Lodge for the possibility of obtaining a warrant. This led to a formal application for a dispensation, on the 9th of November 1839; Bro. Neilson forwarded a petition to Rt. Wor. Bro. Phillips, signed by eight members of the Craft, asking for a dispensation for a Lodge to be known as St. Francis Lodge. The petition reads in part; “We whose names are here unto subscribed being members of the ancient and honourable order of Free Masonry and being desirous to be constituted a regular Masonic Lodge to be held in the village of St. Francis on the Rideau River”. As officers of the intended lodge we have elected Brother James Shaw, (senator) Esquire, Worshipful Master, Master Bro. Alexander Matheson Senior Warden and Bro. William P Loucks, Esquire, Junior Warden.

On Dec. 27th 1839, the officers were duly installed and invested by Rt. Wor. Bro. Phillips from Upper Canada Grand Lodge. St.Francis Lodge met for the first time at the inn of Arthur Wall in the Village of St. Francis later to be incorporated as the town of Smiths Falls.

In the early years, the St. Francis Lodge had quarters at Brother Arthur Wall’s tavern and Brother Armstrong’s tavern. Most recently, it had quarters in the following places: Brother Shield’s brick building, corner of Main and Market Streets; Brother Shield’s block, corner of Beckwith and Williams Street; in 1914 at the Clark and Lewis block; in 1925 at the Murphy block on Russell Street; in 1936 at the Areno block on Beckwith Street; in 1954 the Lodge bought the Johnston School, corner of Russell and George Streets and in August moved the Lodge to this present day location.

In 1908, due to the large membership of St. Francis Lodge # 24, a formal application was made to Grand Lodge of Canada for a dispensation to form another Masonic Lodge in Smiths Falls. On June 19, 1908, the first meeting for this new Lodge was recorded in the register. The Charter for this new Lodge, named “Osiris Lodge # 489 Smiths Falls Ontario”, was issued and dated the July 22nd 1909.

On Nov. 21, 2002, Osiris Lodge # 489 amalgamated with St. Francis # 24. The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the province of Ontario, M. Wor. Bro. Terence Shand, conducted the Ceremony of Amalgamation between the two lodges. We are now St. Francis Lodge # 24.

Lodge meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month except for July and August.
Lodge and club rooms are usually open daily, 1.30 to 4.30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Any interested new members or visiting brethren are always welcome.
