The Town Hall, located at 77 Beckwith Street North was constructed in 1859 to be used for municipal offices and is representative of the construction period.
The Recreation Centre (Old Central School), located at 79 Beckwith Street North, was constructed in 1871 for use as a public school. The building complements the Town Hall and is of the same architectural design.
Both of these buildings were designated as heritage buildings in 1977. This designation prevented any radical altering of their architecture. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Town’s Incorporation in 1983, a municipal complex was designed and built behind, but linking the two heritage buildings. In 1984 a post modern arch was placed between the two buildings which created a grand public entrance to the services of municipal government.
The Town’s Municipal Complex houses all of the administrative offices of a municipal government as well as the Smiths Falls Police Services, the Smiths Falls Fire Department , the Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association.
