2023 Heritage Symposium – Big Plans for Old Places
Smiths Falls, ON – The Smiths Falls Municipal Heritage Committee is proud to announce the return of its annual Heritage Symposium on Monday October 23rd, 2023 at The Station Theatre (53 Victoria Avenue) from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM.
The Heritage Symposium focuses on expanding the local community’s knowledge of heritage preservation and the importance of heritage protection within the community. Each year’s event explores heritage preservation and conservation themes through presentations, discussion, and tours.
“The town’s heritage is held within the walls of its buildings and within the soils of our lands. The preservation and protection of our heritage assets is vital to ensure our stories are told in the years to come,” said Dorothy Hudson, Chair of the Municipal Heritage Committee. “This Heritage Symposium will provide the community the opportunity to learn how we can protect our historic downtown by creating a Heritage Conservation District and using the tools available to municipalities to promote heritage protection.”
The 11th Annual Heritage Symposium – Big Plans for Old Places will feature speakers Niki Dwyer - Director of Development Services with the Town of Carleton Place and Kathryn Jamieson - Manager of Tourism and Culture with the Town of Perth, who will speak on their experience with Heritage Conservation Districts and the protection provided to their communities by the district plans. Lunch will be provided and served at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, followed by a presentation of the history of the Museum by Becky Allen, Executive Director with the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario.
“Heritage buildings and landscapes are a resource that define a sense of place and make our communities unique and distinctive,” said Karl Grenke, Senior Planner. “Heritage Conservation District Plans are one of the tools available to municipalities that allow us to recognize these areas and manage change in a way that fits the character of the area.”
Registration is $25 ($15 Students). Please RSVP/Register by contacting Mary Remmig at mhc@smithsfalls.ca or call 613-283-4124 ext 1136 by October 16, 2023.
