On Monday, March 3, 2025, Town Council passed a resolution endorsing the Federal and Provincial call to buy Canadian.

As part of the approved resolution, council is also urging the Federal and Provincial governments to collaborate with municipalities in protecting Canadian consumers and businesses, and to eliminate any barriers that prevent municipalities from prioritizing Canadian companies for projects.

“I encourage all residents of Smiths Falls and the surrounding area to support our Canadian businesses by opting for Canadian-made products and services. Now more than ever, this is crucial for building resilience, sustaining jobs, strengthening our economy, and protecting our sovereignty” said Mayor Shawn Pankow.

The Town will take existing trade agreement guidance from the Federal and Provincial governments to alter purchasing policies in a way that will prioritize Canadian vendors and suppliers whenever possible. The Town is committed to supporting Canadian businesses.

The “Local Eats” campaign relaunched in January encourages residents (and visitors) to dine at local food establishments, as well as the “Getting Thrifty in Smiths Falls” guide in partnership with the Chamber and DBA. “We developed these campaigns to spark interest in discovering amazing dining and shopping options we have in Smiths Falls and to support local businesses” says Julia Crowder, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism. “These are just a few of many shop local initiatives that have been developed over the years to showcase just how much we have to offer here in our own backyard.”

The Town urges residents to come together and support our local businesses, while also educating ourselves on how to shop and buy Canadian. There are many resources such as cira.ca/ and downloadable apps that can assist consumers in identifying the origin of commonly used products. Some examples are Shop Canadian, Buy Beaver, or O SCANada.

By shopping locally and nationally, we help strengthen our community and ensure its growth and prosperity.
