WHEREAS, Purple Day for Epilepsy was founded in 2008 by nine year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia as she was motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy; and

WHEREAS Cassidy started Purple Day for Epilepsy in an effort to educate others about the disorder, and remind those living with seizures that they are not alone; and

WHEREAS Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting approximately 1 in 100 people in Canada and 50 million people worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Purple Day will help epilepsy organizations in Canada and around the world increase awareness, reduce stigma and empower individuals living with epilepsy to take action in their communities; and

WHEREAS, Purple Day reminds everyone that people living with epilepsy need understanding and acceptance, and deserve comprehensive care and access to innovative treatment options to effectively manage their disease.

NOWTHEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Shawn Pankow, Mayor of the Town of Smiths Falls, do hereby proclaim March 26th, 2025 as Purple Day in Town of Smiths Falls and encourage our citizens to wear purple to support those living with epilepsy and ask all to make an effort to learn more about epilepsy and fight the stigma.
