Town of Smiths Falls Passes 2024 Municipal Budget
Smiths Falls, ON - The Town of Smiths Falls’ 2024 municipal budget was approved last night by Council at its Feb. 20 meeting. The budget makes balanced investments to provide essential services and community programming while ensuring municipal assets and infrastructure are properly managed.
This year’s capital budget will see a total investment of $13,349,263, while operational expenditures total $23,188,406.
As part of budget 2024, there are increases to water and wastewater rates of 5.5% and 3.5% respectively effective Feb. 1, 2024. The property tax rates will be adjusted by 3.5%.
“Council carefully considered and weighed all priorities presented for the coming year. The decision to increase property tax and utility rates is never an easy one and Smiths Falls is no different from other municipalities, seeing rising costs of doing business of providing our community with a high level of services and programs”, said Mayor Shawn Pankow.
Budget 2024 makes investments in all areas of Town operations and including major infrastructure projects such as:
- Funding the new water tower and supporting infrastructure.
- Phase 1 of George Street reconstruction
- Various road re-surfacing and repair projects
- Allocation for a police vehicle replacement
- Parks and recreation investments
- Investment in business retention and expansion, investment attraction and tourism services
- Community facility upgrades
